Whimsy

Publishing on itch.io

Publishing a Whimsy game on itch.io is easy β€” it can be done just in 5 minutes! Here is how to do it:

  1. Export your project with a πŸ“¦ button at the top. You will get an .html file. Remember where it is saved β€” usually it will go to Downloads folder.
  2. Register or log into itch.io if you haven't done it yet.
  3. Go to your Dashboard at the top of the screen and click Create new Project button at the top.
  4. Find the "Kind of project" dropdown and select "HTML" option.
  5. A bit below, in the Uploads section, click Upload files and select the .html file you got earlier.
  6. The file will appear above the Upload files button. Tick a checkbox called "This file will be played in the browser".
  7. There is also an Embed options section. It defines how your game will be displayed. Do the following:
    1. Tick the "Mobile friendly" option β€” Whimsy games are playable on phones!
    2. In the dropdown with a label "How should your project be run in your page", pick "Click to launch in fullscreen" for easy setup and immersive experience for players.
      1. Or pick "Embed into page" and set width to 960 and height to 600 to keep the game on one page with its description. Tick "Automatically start on page load" and "Fullscreen button".
  8. After that, you can fill most of the fields by yourself.
  9. Save the changes and see the result!

Making your game public

Initially your project will be hidden for other users and will be in the "Draft" mode. The mode is displayed at the top toolbar when you're on the game's page, or at the bottom of its Edit form.

While your game is in Draft mode, you can share the game with the Secret link that you can copy under the red "Draft" label on game's page. Once you're ready to fully release your game, click the Draft label at the top of your game's page, and then select "Public" option in the highlighted "Visibility & access" panel. Click Save β€” and you're done!

Style your pages!

☝️ Before publishing your game, itch.io and I recommend adding screenshots of your game at its Edit page and changing the color scheme of game's page with the πŸ–ŒοΈEdit theme button on the top of the game. Look how a page can transform from the default template with a bit of effort:
